US agency proposes new rule blocking data brokers from selling Americans’ sensitive personal data

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has proposed a new rule that would block data brokers from selling personal and financial information on Americans, including their Social Security numbers and phone numbers, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).  In proposing the new rules, months after President Biden signed an executive order to curb the sale of Americans’ private data, the U.S. consumer protection agency said it aims to “rein in” data brokers who sidestep federal law by claiming that they are not subject to the FCRA’s legal provisions.

 

ChatGPT’s search results for news are ‘unpredictable’ and frequently inaccurate

Based on testing done by Columbia’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism researchers, OpenAI’s ChatGPT search tool has some issues when it comes to responding with the truth. OpenAI launched the tool for subscribers in October, saying it could give “fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources.” Instead, Futurism points out that the researchers said ChatGPT search struggled to correctly identify quotes from articles, even when they came from publishers with arrangements to share data with OpenAI.

Microsoft accuses FTC of leaking news of its antitrust investigation

Microsoft is asking the inspector general at the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether agency management improperly leaked news of its antitrust investigation into the company, and make their findings public. Bloomberg first reported that the probe was underway last week, which The Verge later confirmed. The investigation covers Microsoft’s cloud and software licensing businesses, AI, and cybersecurity offerings. Now, Microsoft’s corporate vice president and deputy general counsel Rima Alaily is accusing FTC management of leaking details of the probe, in violation of the agency’s own ethics guidelines.

Meta quietly leans on rival GPT-4 despite Zuckerberg’s bold Llama claims

Mark Zuckerberg has consistently championed Meta’s Llama AI model as a leader in generative AI technology, positioning it as a strong competitor to OpenAI and Google. However, behind the scenes, Meta is complementing Llama with a rival AI model to meet its internal needs. Meta’s internal AI-powered coding assistant, Metamate, uses both Meta’s Llama model and OpenAI’s GPT-4 to help developers and employees with coding tasks, reported The Fortune. The tool, which has been operational since early 2024, dynamically switches between the two models depending on the query, according to a current and a former Meta employee who spoke anonymously to The Fortune.
