What is this?
This is a table of URLs and their corresponding “opt-out” links. This started as a Google Sheets document and is pretty United States focused. The purpose of this page is to help you remove the low-hanging fruit sources of your Personally Identifiable Information. The stuff that pops up on the first page of Google. This is FREE and only costs your time – depending on if you’ve done this before, it may take a lot of time. Other methods do exist that will do this for a fee and monitor your data for you. A paid service may prevent future links from appearing while this method will only remove it when you do it. To best utilize this free method, you may have to redo it every 6 months to every year.
Update May 2022 – Google has released additional support for removing “Personally Identifiable Information and Doxxing Content”. They detail it here in the blog post. The form is available here.
Why should you opt-out?
When you type your name into a search bar online, what kind of information is returned? Is it just your accolades and LinkedIn page? Or is it 50 links detailing your home address, phone number, spouse’s name, and possible email addresses? Do you want this information easily publicly searchable?
How to read and navigate the Opt-Out Guide
Links are sorted by their “Difficulty”. The 0.# links are of varying difficulty but the most important to complete. Difficulty is then ranked 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult or time consuming).
The links with “–” in the difficulty are there to show you that they are given data by other sources. These sources are included in the Parent Company column. If your data is on one of them, use the source referenced instead to remove it. When I initially started this list, I did not include forked services/links. However, as I went, I found it useful to already know they were fed by another source so some were added back. If you find a site that isn’t included below and feel it should be, use this form (Google Forms) to submit it and I’ll get it added. Also, some of these will still provide a separate opt-out process but it isn’t always necessary.
Following the instructions for the top “0” link will expose the places where your data is available online. While that link is a paid removal resource, you don’t need to pay for it. Just use the list as a reference of where your data was found, then find the removal links in this sheet and get rid of them yourself. If you don’t want to or can’t make that source work, simply plug your name into different search engines and find the links here to remove the results.
If you have no time, start with 0.1 and 0.2 removals. Those are either the bigger safety risks or databases that contribute to dozens of other sites (all the “–” Difficulty ones and more). You’ll get your best use of time there.
Generally, all the 4s and 5s either require a lot of effort – copies of IDs, or an email or letter in the mail. If you start with all the 1s and 2s and give it a week, the data might be gone from the 4s and 5s anyway depending on where they aggregate from. I have been running a few “for science” efforts on this.
Instructions
1. If you want to be able to save your email inbox, set yourself up with an “anonymous” emailer. You could use simplelogin.io (forwarding), 33mail (forwarding), or protonmail (separate encrypted email service). You can then create a “filter” in your email service to move emails sent to your forwarding email directly to a subfolder, making them easy to review and delete en masse. Some websites may try to require a “real” email so it also doesn’t hurt to just make a throwaway gmail to use exclusively for this purpose so you never compromise your actual email with spam.
2. Prepare yourself to complete dozens of captchas and receive dozens of emails with confirmation links. Some services will require you to click the confirmation link from the same IP address as the original opt-out request so try to complete the opt-out submission and email clicking all in one session. You will captcha a lot of palm trees and fire hydrants. Further, some services (Dataveria, specifically) will block your email after a certain number of submissions.
3. [Optional] Have a redacted copy of your ID and a redacted copy of a utility bill available if you intend to complete ALL opt-outs. You can heavily redact these. It appears that many don’t even look at the attachment and some may be removed by submitting other opt-out links anyway.
Find a link that isn’t in the list? Have a question or concern? Send it in using this form. I review and update the list and entries as time allows. The last update date for the current list is: February 2022.
Thanks and good luck!
– Cassie
